There is an awful lot of nuclear research that could be done but here is also a lot of existing technology that could help solve transmission problems through small generating stations in mass production today that could be swiftly installed.
This will never happen in the UK for, as I have said for years, the first nuclear power station built within the M25 will convince me of the safety of nukes. Nobody in Tunbridge Wells will ever accept a nuke on their doorstep though small reactor generation is one of the few means of securing energy in the future.
I don't know much about Thorium but this bunch do; http://itheo.org/thorium-energy-conference-2011 The UK is "allegedly" conducting research but it is noticeable more by absence than "white hot technology".

While I agree the essentially Politicians failed the Nation over energy I think we threw away a much greater opportunity when we did not develop the LFTR version of Thorium Nuclear power. Thorium produces one thousandth of the waste of Uranium and because it does not form a critical mass but has to be bombarded with neutrons to produce heat therefore with Thorium 3 mile island could not have happened, nor Chernobyl nor Fukushima. I think we should fast track Thorium development with public funding and abandon any Uranium projects not in progress. The saving on waste alone would more than pay back the cost.
