  • Steve Bell on the appointment of Mark Carney at the Bank of England

The pound hit to a 2-1/2
I suppose what with the pound rising you might wonder if British bankers are warmer, I made a follow on to that too - - - that might be relevant to the crisis management - - - which I shall attempt to post again - - - thanks for the multicultural post - - - ****
  • Steve Bell on the appointment of Mark Carney at the Bank of England

Carney also courted controversy in August when he accused Canadian firms of sitting on piles of "dead money", rather than investing it. Large British companies also have money to invest, but little appetite to do so at a time of strong economic risks

How Carney's monetary policy experience will translate to Britain is less clear. Although the Bank of Canada has raised interest rates, unlike the BoE, economists said this reflected Canada's strong economy rather than a bias on Carney's part
"Pragmatic is how I'd describe him," said Derek Burleton, an economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank. "He doesn't come across as an ideologue"

Under King, the BoE has poured 375 billion pounds into the economy by buying government bonds. The Bank of Canada has not used this policy of "quantitative easing" largely because its economy never weakened enough
Carney pointed to the steady state of Canadian banks, which also contrasts to some of those in Britain that have been sucked into scandals over rigging the Libor interest rate and mis-spelling financial products to people who didn't need them

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Knutsen expressed the mixed feelings in Ottawa about Carney's departure. "It's bitter-sweet. It's our loss. His loss will be felt,"
very Dale Carnegi/Richard Carlson - - - thats interesting it sounds like our bonkers are not too happy about it - - - perhaps it doesnt look very exciting to start with and then theres this dead money business now that is well - - - sitting on wasted assets can be taken more than one way - - - if he can draw that out of us - - - makes the rigging look like unnecessary masochism and drama queening - - -
    • An interesting reference (have you got a url for it?).
Im wondering about his crisis management skills, it sounds as if he is competent but he does not sound like he has been under pressure as much as other governors during this extended crisis. He has experience helping rebuildRussia but that would alone not leave me with a lot of confidence for a number of reasons.
Pleased hiring a foreigner was not necessarily a handicap, it would not surprise me if this is a benefit given some of the scandals, crises and conflicts of interest that lurk around the City of London and similar enclaves.

Instead, he said he favoured “a new arrangement” in which the UK could extricate itself from EU laws that were no longer welcome
Mr Cameron has said that he does not favour Britain leaving the EU but supports asking voters for their “fresh consent” for a new relationship with Brussels at an appropriate time
“I don't think it's as simple as ‘yes, no, in, out’. Suppose Britain voted tomorrow to come out. What would actually happen? In real terms, what would happen is that the foreign office would immediately build a huge - well, the entire delegation would remain in Brussels
