As the leader and his wife embraced on stage this week, there was one burning issue. ?Was that one kiss or two?? the host on Radio 5 demanded of his political editor. With her surprise introduction of ?my husband, and your Prime Minister?, the commanding Sarah Brown had thrust herself into the spotlight ? and ensured that her Tory counterpart, Samantha Cameron, will this week be under scrutiny as never beforeoh – - – well stated – - -
Although Samantha will not be singing her husband?s praises on stage, the Camerons have in general been more open to the media than the Browns. In a pointed jibe, the Prime Minister said in his conference speech: ?Some people have been asking why I haven?t served my children up for spreads in the papers. And my answer is simple. My children aren?t props; they?re people.?
But while the Tory leader has allowed the cameras into his home, and has talked intimately about his wife ? ?an incredible woman? very, very good in business, she?s a brilliant Mum?? ? Samantha has chosen to remain silentmarmalade!
In August last year, she talked to an American magazine, Harper?s Bazaar, to promote Smythson, the high-end stationery firm she works for, and was shocked and hurt by the hostile reaction of some in Britain (one Labour backbencher called it ?seedy? and ?highly inappropriate?, concluding: ?Come back, Cherie, all is forgiven?)
Yet as the likelihood of a Cameron administration grows ever greater, it is possible, by talking to those closest to the couple, to get a picture of the woman who would be ?First Lady? ? and to understand the vital role that has played in softening her husband?s edges and moving him, and his party, towards the political centre
?She is instinctively progressive ? she?s not your typical old-school Tory type at all. She?s a good judge of how things play out in real life beyond Westminster. She?s very bright, but she?s a visual person rather than an intellectual ? she operates on gut instinct, street-smart rather than bookish.? Historically, Dave and Sam were always collecting waifs and strays
Yet when she met David, she was something of a stray herself, and an unusual choice for him. She was hippyish and unconventional ? a wild child and teenage Goth, according to her husbandwot no pics?
Many people, adds one member of the Cameron team, think that Samantha just floats in and out of Smythson a couple of times a week ? but she is there four days a week, often taking extra work back to her husband?s Oxfordshire constituency, and she plans to continue working even if the Tories win the next election
From the outside, it?s easy to be seduced by the seeming ease and glamour of the Camerons? lifestyle. But there is a lot of paddling under the surface. According to Helena Bonham-Carter, an old friend, ?Samantha juggles more balls than a multi-armed Indian goddess could cope with.?gosh that must be worth an ogle or two !
?She was Green a long time before other people,?well yes a shade of – - -

well I mean its like your behind the whitehose thing – - – if you look at who the puppeteers are – - – although I don’t think Sam is a puppeteer – - – she has to do what he says and he’s very very controlling on a personal level – - – to the point where he needs treatment for it – - – I don’t know if she really likes having her accessories picked out for her – - – all laid out on the bed – - – must be difficult being forced into someone else’s t shirt – - -
