Since I was an atheist before I was a Scout - I didn't have a problem with that. Nor do I have a problem with swearing on a Bible. If I don't believe in the deity, then I can't be disrespectful to a non-existent concept can I? Maybe I'm being disrespectful to those who do believe - or am I being respectful by following their ritual even though it has no meaning to me.

Speaking as a renegade ex-Brownie and Guide, the problem is, that if you do this, they then pressurise you to go to monthly Church parades... These are a tedious waste of time on a Sunday morning, and the only reason I put up with it was that there was a mediæval effigy in the church, which I used to try to get a good view of...
