I know that goes against your morals but the shop is likely to prosecute because they would have to. It's a horrible feeling when you want to do the right thing but you must forgive yourself for the genuine mistake and forget about it. I know how you feel because I did it once. I was distracted by my granddaughter who started screaming in her pushchair. I had picked out a top and put it on the pushchair hood as I wandered around looking for a skirt to go with it. But forgot about it when I gave up trying to shop to see to the child and wandered out the store. The alarm went off and I was mortified and embarrased. It was a shop I had an account with and as a regular I knew some of the staff fairly well but their faces went sour and I was terrifed. I felt such a criminal, it was horrid. The manager forgave me fortunately after I apologised over and over again. But I still haven't set foot in that shop since because I don't want to remember my mistake
It is a terrible feeling. I will never forget the feeling of dread I felt, even though I went back, un noticed and Q'ed and paid!! I was sat on a bench looking through my purse and decided I wanted a sandwich so went into the shop picked one up and waited to pay, suddenly realised I was no longer holding my purse and without thinking run out of the shop still holding my pack of sandwiches back to the bench to find my purse!! When I got there and realised my purse was in my bag and I'd taken the money I needed out and put it into my pocket ready to pay I was in total shock of having this unpaid sandwich!! Run back to the shop, sure that everyone would know!! No one did, and I paid for it without anyone knowing any different, I think!!

this is interesting and must happen quite alot ... especially the self service checkouts are quite easy to walk away from them and they could have a message built in that senses you are taking the bags off the bagging area before paying ... you know the item removed from bagging area message doesnt always go ott after you've finished packing
which it could do and I wonder what is their policy re old/disabled people or just some people are more absent minded than others especially if you have your head in the clouds thinking up arty things as well or fantasising and stuff
